Anchor

On the Move

It’s been 2 1/2 years at Anchor in Downtown, St Augustine…what an experience!! . Desinging in the shop, hosting events, meeting new people daily…oh and having a baby (not in the shop).  The exposure and inspiratioin it has brought!!! very rewarding.

Now, it’s time to transform a little, as I am with my second child, and running a large storefront is just not in the cards at the moment.

So I’ve moved my designing to a little one-room studio at 233 W. King St. in Saint Augustine, FL.  I will be doing appointment only and pop up events as well.

Focusing on designing, custom work, and distributing is what is on the menu for 2013. (oh, and having another baby!)

So keep an eye out for some amazing new designs this year!!

I couldn’t have gotten this far without

the people who have supported my work.  I thank you!!!

2012 ~ The Aftermath

2012 was a great year for Anchor Boutique.  Here’s a few highlights:

THE SEVENTH HOUSE collaboration with Heather Gabel.  I was pretty happy with the end result, I think the collection really came to together with some strong pieces.

Matt Pond PA ~ A live performance in my courtyard for the December First Friday event.  Drew a ton of people and was just a really cool moment.

New Designs, I had a lot of fun creating new pieces last year and look forward to something new for 2013.

A shout out in Southern Living!  It was pretty cool to have their photographer show up in October to shoot my rock bands, that appeared in January 2013 issue.

The Seventh House
Laurel Baker x Heather Gabel
limited edition jewelry collection launch
Heather Gabel and Laurel Baker are set to release their first time collaboration “The SeventhHouse”, a limited edition jewelry collection, this December 14, 2012 at St.Augustine’s Anchor Boutique. The name for the line, The Seventh House, is a perfect fit as it is referred to in astrology as the House of Partnership, a shift away from the self toward another — a partner. By cooperating with and relating to another we unite for the purpose of achieving something. The result of this effort is a cohesive collection using mostly the casting method to incorporate a range of materials, from quartz crystals to authentic American Indian arrowheads and snake vertebrae, into delicate necklaces, bold cuffs and statement earrings.

Ababout the designers:
Heather Gabel is a visual artist who’s work combines painting, collage, and photography in a unique fashion to create iconic images that have a lasting visual impact on viewers. She exhibits all over the world and has most recently had a solo exhibition in Chicago. Her upcoming plans include another collaboration project with friend and fellow artist Matt Skiba of the band Alkaline Trio, whom she has done extensive design work for over the past 15 years.
Laurel Baker is a 30 year old entrepreneur and jewelry designer in Saint Augustine, FL.  Born and raised in North Central Florida, she opened Anchor Boutique in 2010 in downtown St. Augustine, which features her designs and other artists.  Currently designing  for brands like Urban Outfitter, and will be featured in Southern Living in January issue 2013, for her work using the Florida State Stone.
She credits her father as her main inspiration, “As a young man, my father traveled the world collecting gemstones, hunting treasure, donating to museums, and learning jewelry trades. Treasure hunting and jewelry making is in my blood and in the world of fashion, unconventional jewelry is in demand.”

Radio Silence

Radio silence
Keeping up a good online presence is pretty crucial. If you don’t make time to tweet, blog, you’re history in a matter of days.
So here I am posting on my blog for the first time since June.
Why has it been so long?
I’ve been on what my dad likes to call “radio silence”.
Radio silence is what my dad would always say when he would not take phone calls or when he would disappear to the fish camp in the woods.
So why am I calling radio silence with my social media?
Let’s just say I’m starting to get back on my feet after having my son.
Owning a business is incredible in so many ways. And having a baby and opening a business are kind of similar: You work hard to create it from concept to a reality, and you do your best to keep it alive. You stay up late at night as you nurture it, and it can’t do anything without you. You worry if it gets sick, you are so excited when the work starts to pay off and it starts being more self-sufficient.
To open a business and and have a baby soon after, has been an ultimate challenge of balance and strength and I’ll have to admit that it has been difficult at times, just wanting to give up with the shop.
That’s when I knew it was time for a little radio silence.
Now that the balance is getting a little easier, I hope to be getting things back up and running at Anchor as there are so many exciting things coming up!
For example, a limited edition jewelry line collabortion with Heather Gabel releasing in December, Anchor will be featured in Southern Living in January, and much more. So keep and eye out for the fun stuff to come!
